Street Fighter EX3 (PS2)

Alright then, as a recently inducted member of the "PS2" club me and Room Mate have been renting Games and DVD's on a weekly basis.

I'll be honest with you, I've never really been a Street Fight fan. I enjoy fighting games but my pallet craves Tekken and it's brutal and fairly accurate Martial Arts. Yelling Ha-Du-Ken! and throwing fireball, after fireball, after fireball, (after fireball), does not a martial art make.

Still SFEX3 is fun the controls are about the same as previous versions of Street Fighter 2. One nagging issue I have with all fighting games when the port over to home systems is the lack of a real joystick button combo. How am I supposed to get a good mashing in with the little PS game controller?

The EX characters look good, not as sophisticated as Tekken, or even Virtua Fighter, but the models animate smoothly. It seems that more effort is put into the EX only characters, Ryu and Ken look like Michelin Men while Skullomania and Shadow Giest are almost seemless.

Where's the game? SFEX3 concentrates on trying to simulate an epic Super Hero like battle. They do this by sending you against multiple opponents at once. In the story mode you even get to pick up fighters that you've defeated along the way, a feature that would be very cool if it weren't for the fact that the game takes about ten minutes to beat.

You heard that right, the story mode consists of about 5 fights total which is just enough to collect three team mates and fight Bison. It takes one sitting to unlock all of the hidden characters. We fought each other for a while, we generally used two member teams and fought fireball heavy bouts till I lost. :( Truly the best mode of play is during the ending credits where you take your fighter and beat the stuffing out of as many opponents as you can.

To Sum up: I would advise you try to rent this before you consider buying it. After just a few days I feel like I've done all I have the patience to do with it. Yet it is good as a pick up game before you're off to work.
